Bayeux Lace
by Marie-Catherine Nobécourt & Janine Potin
A well-presented and comprehensive book - sub-titled 'Yesterday's Lace for Today' - which provides an excellent tutorial in the techniques of this beautiful, traditional Normandy lace - from the basics to the more advanced.
The book, written in the English language, is based on archive material that had been the property of Mademoiselle Durand who taught lace in Caen in the 1920s. Many will have seen her spectacular pillow (see cover picture), set up with hundreds of traditional bobbins, that is in the Musee de Normandie in Caen. It had been given by her to an ex-student who had become a friend in later life. The rest of her belongings - including a handbook, prickings, lace and bobbins - were found in the nuns' attic at the old peoples' home where she lived up to her death in 1945.
After sections on the history of the lace and the lace school, the techniques and stitches of the lace are described progressively, from easy to the more difficult. Each step has notes, pricking, working diagram and photograph of the lace. Loose facsimile copy of Mademoiselle Durand's student's brochure is included
