The author begins with  brief sections on equipment and materials, suggesting modern equivalents of the original, on the techniques used and the elements typical of surface decoration of clothing and furnishing in this period - .plaits, picots and spangles.

She then continues by describing in detail, lace of this type found in various collections -including Jane Lambarde''s mantle at Drapers' Hall in London, furnishing lace at Hardwick Hall, Cavendish lace at Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk, church lace in Italy, braid on Queen Elizabeth's Bible in the Bodleian Library in Oxford and lace shown in various portraits from the period.   These are redrafted for the modern lacemaker with copious working notes.
